STA–MCA Bypass

Editorially reviewedEditorial review Updated 1 min read1 reference

In brief: An STA–MCA bypass connects a branch of the superficial temporal artery in the scalp to a cortical branch of the middle cerebral artery.

The donor artery is dissected, a small opening is made in the skull, and a microsurgical anastomosis is created. Flow can begin immediately. One or more anastomoses may be used depending on anatomy and territory.

The operation is often paired with an indirect technique. Postoperative monitoring addresses graft patency, ischemia, hemorrhage, and hyperperfusion. [1]

The label STA–MCA does not specify recipient branch, flow capacity, territory, or whether an indirect component was added. Operative reports provide those details.
