STA–MCA Bypass
Contents
In brief: An STA–MCA bypass connects a branch of the superficial temporal artery in the scalp to a cortical branch of the middle cerebral artery.
Use in moyamoya disease
Section titled “Use in moyamoya disease”The donor artery is dissected, a small opening is made in the skull, and a microsurgical anastomosis is created. Flow can begin immediately. One or more anastomoses may be used depending on anatomy and territory.
The operation is often paired with an indirect technique. Postoperative monitoring addresses graft patency, ischemia, hemorrhage, and hyperperfusion. [1]
Clinical detail
Section titled “Clinical detail”The label STA–MCA does not specify recipient branch, flow capacity, territory, or whether an indirect component was added. Operative reports provide those details.
