Pial Synangiosis

In brief: Pial synangiosis is an indirect operation in which a superficial temporal artery is opened along its outer tissue and secured in direct contact with the pia.

Opening the arachnoid and placing the donor close to the cortical surface is intended to encourage collateral growth. It is widely associated with pediatric moyamoya programs and may be combined with other indirect elements.

As with EDAS, new circulation develops gradually rather than immediately. Follow-up evaluates clinical events and collateral formation. [1]

Technical differences between named procedures include how the donor is prepared, which meningeal layers are opened, and how broad a territory is exposed.
